YUCCA VALLEY TOWN COUNCIL PART 2: GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS ON TOWN CRIME RATES

The Yucca Valley Town Council heard good news and bad news on serious crime statistics at their meeting Tuesday night. Managing editor Tami Roleff files Part 2 of her two-part report…
Sheriff’s Captain Dale Mondary gave his annual safety report to the Yucca Valley Town Council Tuesday night, noting that deputies responded to more than 27,000 calls for service last year just in Yucca Valley. While serious crimes are up 16 percent from last year, Yucca Valley’s crime rate is 23 percent lower than the national average for cities its size. Moving on to the budget report, the council heard that the town’s revenues and expenditures are in line with where they were last year at this time. However, property values in the town are up 6.8 percent, which means that the town should be receiving increased revenue later this year. While lower gas prices are good for consumers, they are not good for the town, which receives gas taxes. But the openings of several new stores are expected to offset the lower gas tax revenues.
