YUCCA VALLEY TOWN COUNCIL PART 2 OF 3: LEONE’S APPOINTMENTS, CALIFORNIA WELCOME CENTER FUNDING

The Yucca Valley Town Council met in a 4-hour marathon meeting Tuesday night. Managing editor Tami Roleff broke her report into 3 parts; yesterday, a recall; today appointments and welcome center funding; tomorrow, community funding requests…

The Yucca Valley Town Council unanimously approved Council member Bob Leone’s appointments to the Planning Commission and Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Commission. Named to the planning commission was Warren Lavender, and Dr. Edith Jones-Poland to the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Commission. In other business, the Council approved 5-0 the recommendation to start pre-funding the Town’s other-post-employment benefit programs, a move estimated to save the Town $71,000 annually. Next up was a proposal to allocate $25,000 in the 2013-14 budget to fund tourism and regional marketing efforts. Without the funds, the Council was warned that the California Welcome Center would be forced to close, and that there were many other cities who would love to have the welcome center in their city. Mayor Merl Abel urged the council to allocate the funds to the welcome center. “I really do appreciate and want to see the California Welcome Center stay.” Another unanimous vote to spend the money. The park maintenance plan and partnership funding requests will be in tomorrow’s report.
