YUCCA VALLEY TOWN COUNCIL: BLACK ROACK ROAD AND MEDICAL MARIJUANA

In a hastily called ceremony, the Yucca Valley Town Council held a ribbon-cutting for the Brehm Sports Park prior to its regular meeting yesterday. And then at the start of the meeting, the Council formally recognized Bill and Mona Brehm with a proclamation for their dedication, commitment and generosity to the town and the Basin-Wide Foundation. The Council also unanimously approved repaving Black Rock Canyon Road leading into Joshua Tree National Park at a cost of $119,000. Then finally, the Town Council heard a report from the town attorney about an initiative for a proposed town ordinance to allow a limited number of medical marijuana dispensaries to operate in Yucca Valley. Managing Editor Tami Roleff said the Yucca Valley Town Council provided direction to staff and the town attorney last night about how to proceed…

The Yucca Valley Town Council learned last night that if the proposed ordinance to permit medical marijuana dispensaries in the Town gets enough signatures to be placed on the ballot, and passes by 50 percent of the vote or more in an election, the ordinance becomes law and can never be changed, unless it is replaced by another voter-approved ordinance. The Town could develop its own ordinance to be placed on the same ballot for voters to determine which ordinance—if any—they would like to see enacted. The council directed staff and the town attorney to evaluate the proposed ordinance for regulatory shortfalls, to include the number of dispensaries allowed; if the dispensaries will increase the costs of public safety, code enforcement, and environmental impacts, and return to the council with a budget to include such costs.
