YUCCA VALLEY PLANNING COMMISSION OK’S STEAK-N-SHAKE, POSTPONES CELL TOWER DECISION

The Yucca Valley Planning Commission approved a new Restaurant and postponed a cell tower decision last night. Managing Editor Tami Roleff was there and files this report…
Yucca Valley planning commissioners were practically giddy with excitement over the prospect of having a Steak-n-Shake restaurant open in Yucca Valley. At their meeting last night, the commissioners quickly approved the environmental assessment and conditions of approval for the 3,200-square-foot restaurant with drive-through with just a few questions about parking and landscaping. The developer hopes to have the restaurant open by early summer. The public hearing on the second item on the agenda, a 52-foot tall cell phone tower disguised as a water tower, was opened to allow public comment, with those in attendance registering their dismay at having the cell phone tower built in a residential neighborhood, and having it built to resemble a water tower instead of a more aesthetically pleasing palm tree. The applicant had requested a last-minute delay for the hearing, so it was continued until the planning commission’s February 9 meeting.

Progress report on other projects:
The Italian restaurant in the former Jerry’s Restaurant building on the far west end of Yucca Valley is going through plan checks, and the owner has received approval for interior demolition.
IHOP: The owner hopes the restaurant will be open by late spring or early summer.
Arby’s: In plan check
Harbor Freight: Because it often takes Southern California Edison a long time to respond to requests to turn on service, the store’s owners have requested a permit—which was granted—to open using a generator. Work is currently being done on the inside of the former Walmart building between Tractor Supply and 99-Cent Only stores.
