YUCCA VALLEY LOOKS AT TOUGH RULES FOR ADULT ORIENTED BUSINESSES

The Yucca Valley Planning Commission discussed tightening the rules for operating and adult-oriented business in the Town last night. Managing Editor Tami Roleff was at that meeting and files this report…
Technically, the Town of Yucca Valley doesn’t have any adult businesses, because under the Town’s code, an adult business must have 20 percent or more of its stock or floor area devoted to adult-oriented merchandise, and the Planning Commission was informed at its meeting last night that none of the businesses in the Town meet that criteria. Commissioners were told that under the law, they can’t ban adult businesses, but they can restrict where they are located. They are already prohibited from being within 2000 feet of other adult businesses, and 1,000 feet from schools, parks, churches, and residential areas, and 1,000 feet from Highway 62 and 247. There are very few areas in Town that meet those restrictions; two small areas are in Old Town off Yucca Trail, and on the east edge of Town. Commissioners indicated that some of the restrictions they wanted to see were keeping adult businesses off the highways and away from places where children and families congregate, and updating definitions in the Town’s code.
