WITH NOMINAL OPPOSITION, WATER RATE INCREASE APPROVED IN TWENTYNINE PALMS

With nominal opposition, water rates in Twentynine Palms were raised by the Water Board last night. Reporter Mike Lipsitz has details…
At last night’s meeting of the Twentynine Palms Water District, the board convened a public hearing in order to gather testimony on a rate increase from ratepayers. A single ratepayer did speak, and out of the more than 11,000 notices sent, an additional four letters opposing the approximate 6 percent increase were noted. And considering such a very faint voice of opposition the rate change sailed swiftly through. Also last night, the board tabled a planned reorganization until next month, presumably because Director Chauncey Chambers was excused from last night’s meeting. Turning to the state’s mandated conservation targets, General Manager Ray Kolisz reported that last month, the district achieved a 7.3 percent reduction over the same month in 2013. The figure is far short of the 28 percent goal the state has called for. Kolisz, however, emphasized that the people of Twentynine Palms are extremely conservation conscience and figure reflects a system that has very little waste already.
