WEATHER IS HEATING UP; DON’T LEAVE DOGS IN THE CAR

The weather is hot; no surprise, it is almost summer in the desert. The surprise is how many people still put their pets at risk leaving them in a hot car. It only takes minutes for a dog to become overheated, suffer irreversible brain damage, and die of heatstroke when it’s left in a parked car, even a car parked in the shade with the windows cracked. Managing editor Tami Roleff explains what to do if you see a dog in distress that’s been left in a parked car…
Now that warmer temperatures are here, what do you do if you see a dog locked in a car while you’re out shopping? You have a couple of options. You can contact the store manager to make an announcement over the loudspeaker. Animal control officers in Yucca Valley and Twentynine Palms both recommend calling the Sheriff’s Department. The Sheriff’s Department considers a dog locked in a car as an emergency call, and animal control officers, who are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, will be dispatched immediately to the location to check on the animal. Put this number for the Sheriff’s Department in your phone’s directory: 760-367-9544.
