WE REVIEW “AN IDEAL HUSBAND” AT THEATRE 29

The first production of the Theatre 29 season, “An Ideal Husband,” an Oscar Wilde comedy, opened last Friday night to an enthusiastic crowd of theater goers. Reporter Rebecca Havely attended Saturday’s performance and offers this review…
As the red velvet curtain opened to reveal a magnificent Victorian set adorned with exquisitely costumed characters, the audience burst into applause Saturday night at Theatre 29. Kathryn Ferguson’s costume designs are possibly her best ever and need to be seen in person to be truly appreciated. Co-directors Butch Pelfry and Tom Highfill have created an ideal drawing room for “An Ideal Husband,” by Oscar Wilde. Leonard Weber and Janet Peercy make up the ideal couple whose way of life is threatened by the political, blackmailing schemes of Mrs. Chevely, played viciously by Char Childs. The brilliant Ben Bees offers comic relief as the irreverent, yet charming bachelor, Lord Goring. His love interest, the graceful Elizabeth Schmelling, delivers with perfect pace. Marv Schmelling, as the no-nonsense character Lord Caversham, adds to the laughs, as does Cyrus Short as a German suitor, and the chatty Lady Markby, played well by Jasmine Shaffer. Several footman, butlers and ladies round out the cast of characters, adding to the opulence of the piece. For a truly elegant, sophisticated evening of classic theater, don’t miss The Oscar Wilde comedy, “An Ideal Husband.”
“An Ideal Husband” runs Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. through February 7 with 2:30 matinees on January 18 and February 1. Tickets are $8 to $12. For tickets, call the theater box office at 760-361-4151 or visit theatre29.org.
