WE CLARIFY CURRENT GUN LAWS PERTAINING TO THE PARK

This clarification today, as this story broke yesterday, we quoted a paramedic who was told by a ranger that hiking with a gun in a National Park was legal. In fact, carrying a loaded handgun is NOT permitted in the Park. According to Joshua Tree National Park Chief Ranger Jeff Ohlfs, federal law does permit guns to be carried into National Parks, but only if permitted by state law. California state law specifically prohibits carrying a loaded firearm in a “Public Place,” with some exceptions. The Park is considered a public place so carrying a loaded firearm is not permitted. Ohlfs said the fine line between state and federal gun laws is difficult to unravel so recently he met with the County District Attorney’s office for clarification. As a result, Patrick Campbell may face charges of carrying his loaded 9mm handgun into a public place and unlawful discharge of the weapon.
