TWO DEAD, TWO INJURED, IN HIGH-SPEED ROLLOVER CRASH IN JOSHUA TREE FOLLOWING YUCCA VALLEY ROBBERY SATURDAY

Two men are dead and two people are critically injured from a high-speed crash following a robbery in Yucca Valley Saturday. Sheriff’s deputies received a report about 3:15 p.m. Saturday that a home in the 7200 block of Palo Alto had been broken into. The victims called back shortly before 4 p.m. to say that the robbers had returned and threatened them with a handgun, putting the gun to their face and saying they were going to shoot up the house. About 5 p.m., the suspects in the robbery were driving eastbound on Alta Loma, at a high rate of speed when just west of Friendly Hills Elementary School, the driver of the Altima lost control of the car. The car crossed over the westbound lanes and went into the desert north of the road, rolling over multiple times. Three helicopters landed at the nearby school to transport the victims to area hospitals. One man, later identified as Michael Cotterly, 37, of Crestline, died at Hi-Desert Medical Center about an hour later. Sean Keller, 21, of Mountain Home, Idaho, died at Desert Hospital about 6:25; Neither the identities or the conditions of the other two victims have been released yet. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash; the Sheriff’s Department is investigating the robbery prior to the crash.

We live in the friendly hills area of Joshua Tree – we travel that road all the time.
So sorry for the innocent victims – as for the perps – they got what they deserved.
Two less scumbags in the world that taxpayers would have to support.

R.I.P. to my best friend sean keller. Yes u did a stupid thing and srupid stuff I know ur not the one who held that gun regardless people mess up and just because u made a bad decision doesnt make u a bad person sean . • Cam

Well said Terri McMichael. If they had broken into my home with a gun, they wouldn’t have made it back to their car. This desert is changing from a quiet, boring but peaceful place into a complete sh*thole thanks to low life tweakers and wannabe gang bangers.

These superstars could of killed innocent folks…why are we tolerating this garbage. If you like this desert so much then people had better start policing the area. If you see dirt bags then call the police…profiling saves life’s..don’t be afraid to call the police. I hate all the white trash hillbillies that are taking up space in this area…gee lets open up legal marry wanna stores so they can have something to steal…oh it will happen, these lowlifes will rob the medicinal dispensaries, wait and see….read up it is already happening in other towns.

      • Pauly

Take a chill pill,(I know you desert hillbillies like your pills) I call it like I see it…being from other parts of the country I can honestly say the high desert is jacked up from the floor up…I have seen this trashy behavior before in Chicago, DC and Philly, the relatives sticking up for the criminals no matter what they do wrong…it is always somebody else’s fault, he was a good kid etc…good kids don’t put guns in peoples faces, drive with reckless abandon, and continue to put innocent folks life’s at risk. I will never understand the stupidity that I encounter in these places I have been forced to live in thanks to the military, but I will always remember to keep my distance when I see the blood shot eyes and shaky walk of the high desert scarecrow. Now it is time for me to take a nap…night..night stay tuned!!

  • I’m sorry to say Krystina, Sean was a bad/stupid person. Even discounting the associated gunplay-threatening people, he would be alive today if he wore his F#%king seatbelt. If one doesn’t wear a seatbelt while the car is speeding and driving recklessly-it’s even dumber. More details are required for a more complete picture, but the surrounding conditions require an amazing amount of stupidity and/or drugs. A lot of people don’t understand the tragic consequences of those small careless actions. So who were the two people in the back seat?

  • gena

How do I tell my daughter daddy’s not coming home. He should have never been out there.but no. He was not a gang banger . He was the love of my life. He was still young and yes dumb at times.but he would never hurt anyone. I don’t understand what happened or who did what.im sorry for what happened with the my heart. Sean keller’s wife

  • I just read the Hi Desert Star’s more detailed report. Sean Keller was the one driving the Nissan at over a hundred miles an hour Eastbound. Not only is he a bad person-he’s a bad driver and almost ran head-on into a Westbound car. So Krystina-take a look over your surroundings and look over the compromises you have in your life-Sean was one of them. He made a number of blundering bad decisions and he almost made others pay for his stupid decisions. RIP

  • alicia

    To Krystina Wright
Your Bro is a lowlife. That house was my sisters and there were little babies there so shut your mouth and think. I could of lost 3 nephews ages 4 and under. He was dumb for doing what he did and im sorry better him then the innocent children there. Your get what you deserve. KARMA CAN AND BIT HIM IN THE BUTT ALONG WITH HIS BUDDY! I FEEL SO BAD FOR THE INNOCENT VICTIMS IN THE OTHER CAR. WHAT GIES AROUND COMES AROUND!!!!

Who is to say that the people they allegedly robbed didn’t deserve it? How can you say that those people didn’t do something to them first? I’m assuming that is the situation. Until we know for sure, don’t assume the worst. I am a friend of Sean’s and I have known Michael for years. Both good guys as far as I am concerned. We all have our faults, including you guyo. Who are you guys to judge anyone? That’s God’s job, not yours, and it never will be. I apologize to the people in the house if I am wrong. Two lives were taken on Saturday and it ‘s really sad to hear of this. Sean has come to check on me everyday for the past couple of weeks to see if I am okay because of a situation that I am in at no fault of my own. I am 52 years old and for a 21 year old to take the time out of his day everyday amazes me. And especially the fact that I live in Lake Arrowhead and he drove up from the desert everyday. He had a kind heart, no matter his faults. He had a beautiful girlfriend whom he was engaged to and she has a three year old daughter that he was going to adopt. He was a sweetheart, no matter what the paper reads. I just talked to Sean at about the same time this alleged robbery occurred and I didn’t hear anything of the sort going on. So please keep your negative opinions to yourself. There are people hurting here, friends and family of the accident victims. Have some respect because these people are the innocent ones left behind to mourn for the people they loved. And I really miss his friendly face and visits and hope I can handle this situation on my own. RIP Sean and Michael. You both will be missed. Fly with the angels guys, and behave while your doing it!

  • RIP Michael cottler and Shawn Keller I would also like to apologize their actions Michael was my husband he made some poor choices but wasn’t a bad guy will always love u michael

  • Max

These sociopaths didn’t get what they wanted they got what they deserved. If you live by the sword you die by the sword. I feel bad for their victims and the PTSD they must be going through after their home was invaded and their lives were threatened by cowards who use guns to bully and intimidate them. If the families of the criminals are threatening people call the police on them. If they came into my home my K-9 would have ripped them a new one.

  • Sam

It is sad that Sean set this tragedy up for so many. He must have been a very troubled man. I hope he gets the peace he apparently never got on earth.

  • KRYSTINA SEANS SIS

LOOK…… I AM TIRED OF EVERY ONE SAYING THAT THIS IS WAS ALL SEANS FAULT….
LEAVE HIM OUT OF UR MOUTH IF U READ IT SAYS MULTIPAL TIMES SEAN WAS NOT INVOLVED I THIS SO CALLED ROBBERY YES HE DID MAKE A STUPID MISTAKE BUT HE WAS WEARING HIS SEAT BELT AND I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT ALL THE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO TALK ABOUT HOW HE DID THIS OR THAT THERE IS NOT ONE OF U WHO CAN SAY THEY HAVE WENT THE SPEED LIMIT OR THAT U HAVENT DONE SOME THING WORSE I HAVE YET TO FIND A PERFECT PERSON IN LIFE I AM NOT SAYIG THAT WHAT HE DID WAS RIGHT BUT PLEASE LEAVE IT ALONE ALREADY AND LET HIM BE KNOWN FOR THE GOOD THAT HE HAS DONE NOT THIS ONE DOUMB MISTAKE …..
    RIP SEAN

  • Max

I don’t say no to people who commit crimes and people who support criminals I say NEVER!

  • Shelly

There isn’t a single one of us who hasn’t done something worse? Hmmm…well, I for one have never done anything remotely CLOSE to worse than driving a car with 3 passengers on a residential road at 100mph, crashing, injuring 2 and killing 2.

I get family loyalty, Krystina, really I do. Every good person makes bad choices sometimes. But you are being ridiculous. He drove that car and killed himself and another person. He also happened to be about 3 blocks from where I live when he did it. I drive that road twice a day, every day, and there is absolutely NO WAY that even going 70, let alone 100, could be considered just a momentary lapse in judgement. There are homes on Alta Vista, right where he was driving, and residential cross-streets all along that part of the road. He passed La Contenta Middle School and was just about to pass Friendly Hills Elementary School. What he did was beyond just a “doumb mistake.”

  • R♡I♡P
Return if possible I love u so much sean

To michael and sean . Sean was like my older brother I really wish this would not have happen to him he ment the world to me and he still dose. Im sorry this accident happen was a tragic thing . And its no ones falut . But everything in in gods hands now so dont blam anyone he is just watching over us ♡ now

  • Max

There is a huge difference between making mistakes and committing crimes. I feel sorry for people who don’t know the difference. Ignorance is not bliss in the eyes of the law.

  • Max

People who aid and abet, make excuses for criminals and support them are called accomplices.

  • MissLaLa

Anyone whos intrested, should look up sean keller and his sisters criminal record, on the free public record site.
Apperently they both have a long history in breaking the law.

And to krystina, at some point you need to grow up and start taking responsibility for yoir own actions, you cant blame your parents for all you and your brothers mistakes, you are an adult, as was your brother, it was his choice to do what he did.

  • Cam

To the family members sticking up for these guys… how are we supposed to take you seriously when your posts are barely comprehensible?

  • Max

Krysina is a criminal and supports people who like her brother who is just as bad off as she is. The consequences for being a criminal is horrific. Too bad they don’t accept accountability for their horrible behavior and get the professional help that they so desperately need. The family is beyond dysfunctional. Time to put the crack pipe down and break the cycle. Lock em up and throw away the key. The law abiding citizens of the morongo basin deserve to be safe.

  • I bet the money owed or stolen has something to.due with the teenagers mom. Sean was young and exploited for his kindness and.loyalty.. . I.am his brother via foster care.

  • Max

Gary Brian Pfeifer calling people names and blaming the victims are nothing more than intimidation tactics. Sometimes bullies and criminals don’t get what they want….. they get what they deserve. The only thing a criminal wants is sympathy. No sympathy here.

  • Sam

RIP to the deceased and condolences to those who were injured by the random actions of a sad boy who clearly never had a chance in life.

One would hope that his family would learn from this, stop offering rationalizations and excuses, and correct the behaviors that have given them rap sheets.

On the other hand, there is no such thing as failure, one may always serve as a bad example. It is a personal choice.

  • Max

I’m so tired of the good citizens in this community being subjected to the unpredictable behavior of the criminals that are under the influence of alcohol and drugs. When people are children they have control over their lives. Once you become an adult you can’t blame your bad child hood on your choice to hurt innocent people.

  • Sam

Hi Max. Have there been toxicology reports released yet? That usually takes several weeks with a decedent.

  • Max

Who knows. The road is littered with stories about criminals violating the rights of others. The media will just move on to another criminal with horrible behavior. Then one day no one will ever know that the characters in this crime scene ever existed.

  • Cam

Sam, go look up their criminal records. Plenty of drug charges.

  • Greg

I seriously don’t think anyone deserves to die regardless.. Theses Guys are paying the price with 2 manslaughter charges and robbery charges, but realistically the Guys girlfriend will get a plea to testify against Her boyfriend for endangerment, everything in the end will fall on Him, but maybe this help straighten Him out, no one is perfect and We all make mistakes, forgive theses Guy.. I lived across the street from them and they jumped My brother and knocked His tooth out, but My brother isn’t mad, see the robbry victim is just as at fault, if You don’t wanna get treated like a dog, don’t play with dogs

  • Greg

Everyone plays gangster til gangster stuff happens, Yeah the kid got a gun put his face, but honestly if they were serious about killing Him they would have. They just wanted what was owed and kid didn’t wanna pay up, so He called the cops, no one had to die, only if the kid would have been a man and said (OK let’s do this) so in the end it’s His fault just as much as it is the robbery suspects fault.. I’d cross paths with these Guys at night walking to Von’s, I never had any problems, Know why? because I avoided Them and showed Them respect and didn’t take loans I couldn’t pay back..

  • Greg

Like it says in the bible
(He without sin shall cast the first stone) The Lord is with Him and His girl more than He is with You. The bible was created by Men in deep trouble with Law, some were Murders and Thieves.. The Thieve on the cross excepted Jesus as Lord and Savior.. So go head and judge these Men as if You’re perfect.. My opinion does matter and neither does Yours.. Stop gossiping like school girls and let the families mourn

    • Patti Cottler

Thank you Greg for trying to stop all the hearsay…I have been praying for all involved in the accident as well as for all the families. My son, Michael David, is gone from this world and free from all pain. He has two little girls, Patricia (7) and Brae-Lynn (5) we are caring for. How are Scott and Tara? I haven’t heard anything about how they are doing. I’ll keep all in my prayers. Thank you, Patti Cottler, Michael’s Mom.

  • pauly

“it’s His fault just as much as it is the robbery suspects fault” Wow I have heard it all from the desert hillbillies. Please stop saying “gangster this gangster that”, these individuals are poor excuses for human beings. Gangsters are lazy good for nothings, back in the day they would of been taking care of by the adults of the community, to bad adults no longer have the heart to fix the problems. If they cannot find a decent way to make a living except being burdens to society then why should the rest of society suffer., If these losers want to be tough guys they should of served their country instead of dealing and using…stop quoting the bible and acting like the victims are responsible in any way shape or form. Pathetic the excuses being made for failing, shameful.”I lived across the street from them and they jumped My brother and knocked His tooth out, but My brother isn’t mad”, If that was my brother these dirt bags would still be in the hospital…As I read Greg, I believe nobody can be that stupid, this must be sarcasm? Is it? Please say yes, pretty please…nobody can be that delusional.

    • Greg

No actually it is very true, but My brother started it and they finished it… My brother took it like a Man and didn’t bent out of shape about it.. For the record I’m not from here.. I’m from North Scottsdale.. My only question for You?? Is why are You so mad at theses Guys?? What did they do to You?? Seriously just answer that..

  • Greg

You’re very welcome! I’m sorry for Your lose and I knows He’s with the Lord today, because only God knows our hearts and desires.. At first I didn’t know much about this I kinda jumped as defense for the true victims here.. After reading and doing research Tara was actually able to free Herself from the wreckage with passerby’s help and Scott was trapped, but was recoved, but with their Tara and Scotts names being released means they will be Okay, but I’m sure they’re still in bad condition and I think Scott and Tara well probably get reduce charges especially after being victimized, however Scott will probably get Armed Robbery and Home invasion, aggrieved assault with a deadly weapon, as for Tara She was just there and She’ll probably have to testify against Scott for reduced charges.. I think everything happens for a reason and maybe this will change Scott and Tara forever for the better, unfortunately Micheal and Sean didn’t get that opportunity, instead they paid the ultimate price with lose of life and as for You and His family, their families are the true victims in this tragic incident, but true criminals criminals are the ones who called the police and I’m sure 140 dollars was owed, but they did want to pay up and Scott, Michael, Sean felt disrespected, it no longer becomes about the money, its the principal!! I cross paths with Scott and His brothers, friends at night in complete darkness of the night alone, never had any problems, but as for My brother He provoked Them and got jumped, but My brother deserved it, anytime someone ever pulled a gun on Me, I did something wrong but I handled it like a man and didn’t run or call the cops I just took it and learned from it.. I forgive everyone and anybody, because if I want forgiveness from the Lord, I gotta forgive as a Man but people shouldn’t judge anyone and act like they never did anything wrong, because We all have done bad things in our lives and it’s not for us to say who lives or dies, that’s for God say!!!! The ones who get robbed provoke this and now are playing victims and trust Me they’ll it all the way to the bank.. Again I’m sorry and Jesus love You!!

  • Greg

Sorry!! That message was so long I accidentally made some typo era’.. The ones who got robbed will play victims and ride it all the way tho the bank****** But the true criminals here are the ones who called the police and I’m sure they did owe the 140 dollars**** People need to stop looking at Scott, Michael, Sean, Tara and need to start looking at what did the teens do to put themselves in that situation…

  • Amanda

    Max and others,
What qualifies you to diagnose anyone a sociopath? Please enlighten us where did you receive your degree? Do you even know exactly what a sociopath is? By definition a sociopath:
A person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior and a lack of conscience.

Now with that being established considering I doubt you have the proper qualifications to diagnose anyone with any kind of personality disorder, especially without having the pleasures of speaking to that person, I would have to suggest you stick to what you know. It is apparent you are not a medical professional and it is also apparent you are not in any way shape or form a legal professional. I would also be willing to wager you have never spoken to or met Sean. I have had the pleasure of meeting Sean during his brief existence on this earth. I can tell you as a matter of fact the he was absolutely not a sociopath nor was he a “low-life” or “scumbag” or “hillbilly”. What you do not know is that he was a sweet kind and loving young man with a difficult life. Maybe he did make an ultimately fatal mistake but should it have cost him his life? Who are you to decide? I am a legal professional and what you and these other heartless, ignorant, miscreants are saying is wrong. I can also tell you if take the time to look up the criminal record you will saw Sean is not the “tweaker” you are insinuating he has no past drug charges. Did it ever occur to any of you that maybe just maybe Sean was there to pick up his friends? That would make him guilty by association, however, not the monster you make him out to be. In one of the other news articles it states two of the other passengers in the vehicle had had a prior confrontation with the supposed “victims”.
This did not happen due to stupid kids randomly picking a house and burglarizing it. Focus some of your negativity on finding out the whole truth rather than pointing to Sean and blaming him because he is no longer able to defend himself.

  • Greg

Sorry again, I’m writing from My phone and it has word completion so it keeps making era’s… I plan on writing Tara and Scott once they get released, because I know they’ll get jail/prison time and want them to be in good spirits about this whole incident… The good news is once Tara and Scott recove the truth will come out about what truly happed and shine some light on this case.. The Media and people who don’t understand or know them will say (Theses Guys are bad) but don’t listen to it, because I know deep down in My heart they’re good people who made bad decisions.. I make bad decisions all the time but I’m only in My 20s and I’m still learning, life is a learning process..

  • Sam

Whose foot was on the accelerator when the car left the road at more than 100mph? Looks to me like Sean set up his own situation and the situation of the others in the car that day. They all paid a terrible price and despite the sympathy I have for the families and those left behind, I can’t help think the whole thing was unavoidable.

Sean made the choice for all of them to go that fast. Those who want to shift the blame to Sean’s parents should understand that while they were contributors to Sean’s problems, he was a grown up who could make his own choices and he made bad choice after bad choice on his own.

Frankly, I had a hard time coming up and I never killed anyone or mixed myself up with gun toting criminals even when I was a homeless teen.

  • Patti Cottler

Greg: My son (from what I have been told) didn’t even know the two people in the back seat. Also, I only met Sean at Michael’s girls swimming lesson on July7. That’s the first time I ever met Sean. He was very proper, shook my hand when introduced, would never have thought anything could be wrong. Yet, 5 days later Sean and Michael are dead, and two others severly injured. My son hitched a ride, and from what I can dream of, he made a terrible mistake with the two in the back seat. I pray for all that were injured and hope this whole thing will be settled by a police report. Does anyone know about Sean’s services? Michael’s services will be held 8/8 at 10:00 at St. Frances Xavier Catholic Church, on Crest Forest Drive, Crestline, Ca. on 8/8 at 10:00; lunch to follow. Please advise if you are coming so I can let the church know how many to expect for lunch. God Bless All. Michael leaves two beautiful daughters – Patricia Fraya Raine Cottler (7) and Brea-Lynn Valkyrie Cottler (5). Please keep us in your prayers. Thank you and God Bless, Patti

    • Greg

He didn’t know Tara and Scott? I’m familiar with Scott and His brothers. I lived across the street from them and police were always going over there, or to neighbors.. They never messed with Me, but they did jump My Brother for messing with them, but every time I’d see thoses kid they’d be in a PACK with multiple people lifting weights.. I’d see Tara and I think Scott he’d always be in black and they’d be walking to the store pushing a baby stroller.. I know of other people they’ve jumped too.. I will attend His serive if possible, but I’ll let You know for sure by tomorrow and I most definitely would love too.. I’ll be praying for You and Him, Your Family and their Family.. God bless You and I’m sorry about Your lose

  • Sam

My condolences, Patti Cottler. I don’t know how a parent ever gets over the loss of a child…or how a child gets over the loss of a parent. This was a terrible tragedy. My thoughts are with you. My heart breaks for you.

  • Max

Cam, their criminal backgrounds tell me all I need to know about these criminals. According to these criminals it is a crime to call the police. ROFL. A normal intelligent human being would know that if you think that someone owes you money that the correct thing to do would be to take the person to court and let a judge rule on the matter. It’s pathetic to think that someone out there thinks its perfectly normal to put a gun to someones head and threaten their life over a debt.
