TWENTYNINE PALMS HIGH SCHOOL GOLFER NAMED LEAGUE MVP

For the second year in a row, Twentynine Palms standout golfer Brandon Steffins has earned De Anza League MVP honors. League finals this week saw 32 high school golfers at Desert Winds Golf Course aboard the Combat Center. Head varsity Golf Coach Gary Bell said high winds around 20 to 30 mph created difficult playing conditions for the first round. Steffins shot 8 over par 80 leading the field 4 shots over. Shadow Hills’ golfer Luke Rockwell took second with Yucca Valley’s Brandon Lopez in third. Twenty players, including all six Wildcats, advanced to the final round held at the La Quinta Resort Dunes Course. In the last group of the day, Steffins, playing alongside Rockwell, Lopez and, Shadow Hills’ Cameron Dunn, finished with a two-day total of 163, clinching his second straight De Anza League individual title. The golf team finishes the season with seven league wins and three losses. Steffins now moves on to the CIF individual regional tournament at Canyon Crest country club in Riverside Monday May 12.
