TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY COUNCIL APPROVES HOUSING DEVELOPMENT, COOK’S LAND PRESERVATION BILL

The Twentynine Palms City Council made two controversial decisions last night. Z107.7 Reporter David Haldane was there and files this report…
In a long meeting marked by impassioned speeches, the Twentynine
Palms City Council made two controversial decisions Tuesday night.
First it narrowly approved “The Ridge at Twentynine Palms,” a 200-unit
housing project on 20 acres south of the Marine base near Condor
Road. That, despite some objections during a public hearing that the
project could have negative environmental impacts and contribute to
an already low rental occupancy rate citywide.
The vote was 3-2, with Council members Cora Heiser and McArthur
Wright voting nay. Heiser said that, while supporting the project
overall, she had problems with some of the wording in the motion.
Wright said he opposed the housing project due to its potentially
negative impact on the larger rental market.
“We need more people in Twentynine Palms,” he said, “not more
housing.”
In other action, the Council agreed to spend $100,000 to remove several blighted buildings along Highway 62 and Adobe Road.
