TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY AND WATER MEET TONIGHT ON FIRE DEPARTMENT TRANSFER

The Twentynine Palms City Council and Water District Board will meet together in a joint special meeting for both tonight. Reporter David Haldane says the two agencies will look at what needs to be done to ease the transfer of the fire department to the county…
The Twentynine Palms City Council and Water District will meet jointly tonight with only one goal in mind: to figure out how the city can support the district financially to pave the way for the county’s takeover of its firefighting responsibilities.
An ad hoc committee representing both agencies has put together a plan including, among other things, the district’s sale of its fire station for $250,000 and the temporary deactivation of a nearly $3 million liability required to fund the pensions of retiring firefighters.
Previous plans by the city to honor its pledge to help make the deal happen have been rejected by the water district’s board of trustees. The question of the hour: do the two agencies now see eye to eye?
Tonight’s meeting begins 5 p.m. at the Twentynine Palms Community Services building on Joe Davis Drive.
