SNAKES ON ROADS

It might look like a stick, but it may be a fellow living creature.  Ranger Cathy Bell says, be kind to snakes…

Imagine driving through Joshua Tree National Park at sunset on a summer evening. The rock formations are glowing golden. You have the windows down to enjoy the fresh air. Up ahead you spot what looks like a tree branch lying near the center of the road.  “Hmm, that’s strange,” you think–there aren’t many plants in the desert that have such long, straight limbs–it’s tough to see in the low light but just as you’re about to bump over the stick you notice it’s not a stick at all. It’s a snake!

Snakes like to soak up warmth from the pavement on the park’s roads after sunset. Please be careful not to run them over. Snakes are essential to food webs in the desert, and like all wild animals, they are protected within the boundaries of Joshua Tree National Park.  Help us protect our wildlife. Yield to animals in the roadway. Give animals plenty of space. Never try to touch or pick up a snake.

For  Z107.7, this is Park Ranger Cathy Bell, reminding you to drive with care to protect our wonderful wildlife.
