SMOKE FROM A FIRE NEAR ANZA DARKENS OUR SKIES

Smoke from a fire in the Anza area is coming into the west end of the Morongo Basin. A motor home fire burned one person and spawned the 500-acre wildfire that prompted an evacuation in the mountains east of Anza. The injured victim suffered second-degree burns over about 3 percent of his body during the 11:44 a.m. incident Monday, along Highway 74 east of Highway 371. This morning, the blaze was no longer spreading and is 20 percent contained. Highway 74 was closed throughout the night, Cal Fire officials said. At least 350 firefighters were dispatched to the incident. They included five hand crews and the crews of 46 fire engines. Supporting them were seven air tankers, five helicopters, eight water tenders, and two bulldozers. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling the blaze.
