Scam artists are still luring trusting area residents into parting with their hard-earned money. Reporter Rebecca Havely says beware of the “Arrest Warrant” scam…
In this scam, con artists are taking advantage of technology that can change whatever is visible on Caller ID, and allow the to pose as the office of the local sheriff or other law enforcement agency. They call to say there is a warrant out for your arrest, but that you can pay a fine to avoid criminal charges. Of course, these “police” don’t take credit cards; only a wire transfer or prepaid debit card will do. Sometimes these scams seem very personal; the scammer may refer to a loan or other financial matter. It may just be a lucky guess, but don’t be fooled into thinking you are about to be arrested.
