SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES FORUM LAST NIGHT

A forum for Morongo Unified School District Board of Education candidates drew an audience of about 70, dominated by District employees last night. Reporter Dan Stork tells what they were asked, and hones in on a question that exposed individual priorities…
The dozen questions posed to school board candidates ranged over employee wages, communication on financial matters, how to find a new superintendent, contracting out services, where to apply expected funding increases, attitudes toward charter schools, overburdened school administrators, and athletic facility deficiencies. The candidates generally agreed that openness, transparency, and community involvement are good things, that outsourcing of services should be avoided, and that a search for a permanent superintendent must be done with care and rigor. A single question brought out individual responses: What are you going to do for our community and our school district? Incumbent Chris Proudfoot said he wants to get community and district organizations working together, and to get parents involved and informed. Cindy McVay would like to put sixth grade in middle school, would like to eliminate combination classes, and would like the District to do more to alleviate the stresses faced by military families. Hilary Slotta said she has been, and will continue to be out in the community. She would also like to see expanded career and technical education, smaller classes, and more arts and music programs in the schools. Gary Horn said he won’t be doing anything that he isn’t already doing as an involved parent and volunteer, but he’ll be doing it on a grander scale. Doris Lawless also wants expanded career, technical, and vocational programs to keep students involved, would like to see the smaller class initiatives expanded to grades four to six, and supports more early childhood education.
