A one-year-old Joshua Tree boy miraculously survived after being swept away by flood water in Joshua Tree. The powerful flood Tuesday destroyed the family home, washed away the boyâs bedroomâand carried one-year-old Tristan away along with it.
âWe really thought that we lost him,â Tristanâs mother Ryan Scarcy said. A torrent of gushing floodwater slammed into the home of Ryan Scarcy and Brian Bennett, pouring through the house and into the boyâs bedroom. The water level continued to rise until it reached the roof, at which point the entire wall was washed away. Scarcy and Bennett realized their child was gone, swept up in the current. âWe came around thinking we can break a window to get in and the whole wall was gone,â Bennett said. âHis room was gone and he was nowhere to be found.â The water carried young Tristan hundreds of feet from his home and parents, past a barbed wire fence at the edge of their property. Suddenly a friend shouted that their son was still alive. Bennett said, âI turned around and saw him with his head peeking out of the mud, ran out and picked him up. I looked at him, made sure he was breathing; he was just in shock.”
While the family calls Tristanâs survival a miracle, they are sobered by the realization that they lost almost everything in the flood. âThe house is gone, the furniture is gone, Tristanâs things are gone,â Scarcy said. âBut Iâm really thankful to have my son, that we have him and that heâs still alive.â
