ONE IN CUSTODY AFTER FRIDAY CRASH AT YUCCA MESA AND THE HIGHWAY

We have few more details on a traffic collision in Yucca Valley Friday morning. A Yucca Valley man is in custody following the rear-end crash at Yucca Mesa Road and Highway 62. Shortly before 9:30 a.m., westbound traffic was stopping for a red light at the intersection when Edward Gutierrez, 20, who was driving a white Volvo, rear-ended a Mazda, driven by Monica Lovell, 19, of Twentynine Palms, and then spun off and hit a white van in the next lane. Lovell said Gutierrez asked to use her phone, but when she said she was using it, he ran off westbound, into the desert. CHP officers caught Gutierrez after a short pursuit and took him into custody. A witness said the white van then drove off, and a woman, identified as Carol Sullivan, 31, of Joshua Tree, and two children, ages 10 and 8, who were with Gutierrez in the Volvo were taken to a hospital for evaluation. Edward Gutierrez was arrested for investigation of felony driving under the influence causing injury, hit and run, child endangerment, and on a warrant for violating the terms of his probation for a conviction in August of possession of a controlled substance. Carol Sullivan was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment and possession of a controlled substance.
