ONE ARREST AFTER A STANDOFF IN MORONGO VALLEY

An Apple Valley man was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon in Morongo Valley Saturday night, after a 45-minute stand-off. Sheriff’s investigators say deputies were called to a domestic disturbance about 11:30 p.m. Saturday at a home in the 51000 block of Canyon Road in Morongo Valley. While en route, responding deputies were told that the situation was escalating, with several family members involved. When deputies and CHP officers arrived, they found Daniel Flores, 35, in the dining room holding onto his wife with a broken piece of glass in his hand. Flores was threatening to kill himself, and then cut himself several times with the glass. All the other family members were able to get out of the house safely. A stand-off ensued for the next 45 minutes, as Flores used his wife as a shield. Deputies attempted to subdue Flores with a taser, but were unsuccessful, then used a bean bag shotgun, striking Flores twice in the upper body, and dropping him to the floor. Deputies took Daniel Flores into custody. His wife was unharmed. Daniel Flores was taken to Hi-Desert Medical Center for treatment, then booked into the Morongo Basin Jail for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon, with bail set at $50,000. The District Attorney’s office will determine whether to file additional charges against Flores for spousal abuse and two counts of assault against a peace officer.
