NEW PAID SICK LEAVE LAW AFFECTS ALL LOCAL BUSINESSES

A new state law that took effect yesterday will require all California employers to provide their employees with at least three days of paid sick leave. Managing editor Tami Roleff provides some details on the law…

More than 6.5 million California workers will benefit from a new law that will ensure they don’t have to come to work sick. CalChamber policy expert Jennifer Barrera explains. “An employer is required to allow an employee to accrue one hour for every 30 hours worked. For full-time employees, that’s eight days per year. An employer can limit the use to three days, but they need to specify that and notify employees.” And the law doesn’t cover just full-time employees, or just big companies. “It covers all employees, whether you’re part time, seasonal, per diem, all employees are covered.” If employers do not comply with the law, there are penalties. “The bill specifies an employer can not discriminate or retaliate against an employee who seeks to utilize their paid sick leave.” For more information, see a link in this story at z1077fm.com.
