MORONGO UNIFIED SCHOOL API SCORES EXCEED STATE AVERAGES

Throughout the state of California, the overall Academic Performance Index (API) in public schools declined by two points from 2012 to 2013, following an increase of 10 points year-to-year in recent years. Morongo Unified School District saw an 18-point increase, which matches Needles for the best in San Bernardino County. A desirable target API is 800 or more, which has been achieved by nine schools in the MUSD. The three schools that did not increase their APIs are Joshua Tree Elementary, with a 2-point decrease, Onaga Elementary, with an 8-point drop, and Yucca Valley High, which was unchanged. (No data was reported for Oasis Elementary because “during the administration of the statewide academic testing programs, the school had an irregularity in the testing procedure affecting 5 percent or more of pupils tested,” according to the state Department of Education API web site). The schools with the biggest increases—around 50 points each—were Hope Academy Charter and Black Rock Alternative/Continuation School, which also had the lowest APIs in the District, in the low 600s. The scores of other MUSD schools with reported data ranged from 739 at Yucca Valley High to 895 at Condor Elementary, with increases of 16 to 41 points at 12 schools.
