The Joshua Tree National Park Association announced Terry Weiner and the Board of Directors of the Desert Protective Council as recipients of the 2014 Minerva Hoyt Conservation Award. The purpose of this award is to recognize individuals or organizations that have made notable achievements in the areas of leadership, protection, preservation, research, education, and stewardship leading to a significant and lasting contribution on behalf of the deserts of California. The Desert Protective Council began around a campfire in the mouth of Deep Canyon, Palm Desert over 60 years ago. Over 100 caring individuals resolved to protect Joshua Tree National Monument from proposed mining. Their hard-won successes resulted in the preservation of wildlife habitats and natural resources of the four great deserts of the southwest.
