LAKE FIRE STALLS, NOW 70 PERCENT CONTAINED

For the last two days, the mammoth Lake Fire has stalled at 49 square miles, allowing hand crews and bulldozer operators to laboriously strengthen and extend their fires lines. As a result, 70 percent of the perimeter was surrounded by fire lines by last night. Fire officials are beginning to focus on the repairs that will be needed to minimize the risk of soil erosion before the arrival of winter storms. The work also will include restoring miles of burned habitat within the San Gorgonio Wilderness. Scattered rain showers helped limit fire activity Wednesday. The towering smoke column is long gone. The fire is mostly smoldering. But some hotspots are expected to linger until the heavy rains and snow that are still months away. The fire began June 17 behind Camp de Benneville Pines in the Jenks Lake area of Barton Flats. For several days, the flames raced eastward, deep into the wilderness. Then, a wind change steered the fire northwest toward mountaintop towns on the outskirts of Big Bear Lake. The Rim Rock home of artist Diane Best and three outbuildings burned. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
