JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK’S PINTO BASIN ROAD OFFERS MANY WONDERS

A beautiful drive awaits you in your own backyard. Joshua Tree National Park Ranger Pam Tripp says Pinto Mountain Road through the park holds many wonders…
Joshua Tree NP consists of two desert ecosystems. Though many people come to see the unique Joshua Trees and boulders of the Mojave Desert, there is much to see along Pinto Basin road, which runs through the Colorado Desert. Start at the Cottonwood Spring area to see a Palm Tree oasis up close, then drive the main road north into the Pinto Basin. This land once held water and provided habitat for the first known humans living in the park. It now provides an area for viewing the wildflowers that bloom in spring. Continuing the drive, you will pass many fantastic views, such as the Pinto and Hexie Mountain ranges. The many stops along these ranges have exhibit signs that will explain the different features of the Colorado Desert and will give you a sense of the history and formation of the area. Stop at any visitor center or call 760-367-5500 for more information about the spectacular Pinto Basin.
