JOSHUA BASIN WATER DISTRICT LOOKS AT BUYING A SQUARE MILE OF LEGALLY ENTANGLED PROPERTY

After a routine meeting tonight, in which the Joshua Basin Water District Board of Directors will hear presentations on the board’s role and function, review its will-serve policy and standing and ad-hoc committees, the board will go into closed session to negotiate terms and conditions to buy property owned by Scott McKone, the Evan Corkett Living Trust, and Robert Ellis. In 2011, the Joshua Basin Water District won a lawsuit against Ellis over access to wells on 640 acres he owned in the Sunfair area of Joshua Tree. Ellis was subsequently sued by his business partner, Corkett, who said he told her he already owned 320 acres, said he needed money from her to buy the adjoining 320 acres owned by McKone. Corkett claims that Ellis used her investment money meant for the business partnership for his own personal expenses; that he sold water from the aquifers under the property and kept the money for himself; and that he took the revenues from the Earthwise Organic Farms on the property for his personal benefit. Ellis filed for bankruptcy and has since died, although the lawsuit by Corkett against him is still ongoing. The Joshua Basin Water District’s meeting will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at 61750 Chollita Road in Joshua Tree.
