HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: SCORES AND SCHEDULES

The Trojans lost Friday’s game 49-13 against Desert Hot Springs. Coach Andrew Amosa said standouts of the game were sophomore Lucas Lopez with the game’s two touchdowns, and senior Larry Williamson, leading the team with 12 tackles on defense. The JV Trojans improved their record to 5-0 with a 34-6 win over Desert Hot Springs. Standouts of the game where freshman Caleb Robinson with two touchdowns on offense and Elijah East with eight tackles and two sacks on defense.

The Twentynine Palms varsity Wildcats traveled to Apple Valley Friday to face Granite Hills High School and returned with a 46-6 non-league victory over the Cougars. The ‘Cats cruised to a 40-0 halftime lead thanks to a stingy defense and a terrific passing game, as the visitors rolled up 398 yards in the air and shut out the home team until the final two minutes of the contest. Senior quarterback Jimmy Shragge had another outstanding game as he completed 16 of 21 passes, for 329 yards on the evening. Senior wide out Demetrius Holmes caught seven passes for 150 yards and three touchdown receptions. Sophomore D’Shaun Barrett caught two touchdown passes of 75 and 71 yards in the second quarter as the ‘Cats outgained the Cougars 556 to 223 in total yardage. Junior Derek Sutherland also had a big game, recording six catches for 67 yards. Senior Beayahn Carrllo had a long touchdown reception early in the second quarter as he took a screen pass 30 yards for a score. Carrllo also had 92 rushing yards on 18 carries, as the offensive line led by Nick Folts, Shane Estrada, Hekili Paahana, Eric Jordan, and Andrew Wilson continued their terrific effort on the front line. Shragge ended the contest with six touchdown passes for the game and has 12 touchdown passes in the last three games combined.
The ‘Cats’ defense continued its terrific plays, as it only allowed five first downs in the first half. Senior Kole Green recorded another interception, and junior Caleb Roy recovered a fumble and blocked a punt to set up a Wildcats touchdown. Senior linebacker Arlen Myers made key plays throughout the game, recording 13 tackles to lead the team. Defensive tackle Andrew Wilson had five tackles and two sacks, and fellow defensive linemen Shane Estrada and Caleb Roy teamed up for seven tackles and two and a half sacks for the game. Defensive end Gunnar Moss had a sack, four tackles, and batted down three pass attempts on the night.
The 5-0 Wildcats return home Friday night for another important De Anza league contest, as they will face defending league champion Shadow Hills. The Knights are 2-3 on the season, but have played a difficult non-league schedule and are 1-0 in league play after a 49-14 victory over Desert Mirage. The ‘Cats are ranked in the top 4 of the Northwest division in CIF, and are in a tie for first place with Shadow Hills, and Desert Hot Springs after the first two weeks of league play.
The frosh-soph team also had a tremendous game as they also recorded their fifth straight victory winning 48-6. Hunter Tygart once again had an outstanding game as he scored on several long runs and had an interception return for a score. Sophomore quarterback Quentin Griffin had several long passes including a 48-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Castaneda. Bryton Williams ran well in the contest and started the team in the right direction with a 20-yard touchdown run for the ‘Cats’ first score. Dylan Zavala recorded his first touchdown of the season on a seven-yard run. Tyler Cobb, and Samuel Smith, also had terrific games on the offensive side. Outstanding efforts by linemen Andrew Wallace, Kyle Kropacek, Adam Mapuatuli, Casey Allen, and Ephraim McCowan were key to the ‘Cats’ victory over the Cougars.

In high school sports tomorrow, the Twentynine Palms High School tennis and volleyball teams will travel away to play Desert Mirage High School. Tennis starts at 3:15; volleyball at 4:30.

The Joshua Springs Lightning volleyball team will travel away to play Bloomington Christian School. First serve is at 5:30.
