HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS REPORT

In a tough defensive battle, the Twentynine Palms High School Wildcats football team gave up a special team’s score and an interception return, to fall to visiting Desert Mirage High School 13-7 in De Anza league play. Both teams played tremendous defense on the evening as each team was held under 200 yards of total offense.  Coach Ernest Martinez said key standouts for the Wildcats were Colton Myers, who led the team with 14 tackles on the game. Kyle Hope, Andrew Wilson and Dylan Martinez had outstanding defensive games, with the trio combining for 34 tackles, three sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Sophomores Eneliko Tuli and Caleb Roy played well and teamed up for 20 tackles as well. The Wildcats will look to rebound against their rivals from Yucca Valley in the 47th annual Kiwanis Club Battle of the Bell. The ’Cats will take a 5-4 record into the contest and need a victory to get a possible third place tie in the De Anza league and keep their playoff hopes alive with a victory. The Bell game has been played every year since 1968, with the Cats winning the “Bell” 28 times and the Trojans holding 18 victories. The Wildcats won last year’s contest 21-0 to earn a playoff spot in the CIF Playoffs.

In high school sports tomorrow, the Joshua Springs Lightning volleyball team will travel away to Desert Chapel. First serve is at 5:30.
