FORMER TWENTYNINE PALMS MAYOR, COUNTY OFFICIAL, HURT IN PLANE CRASH

A former Twentynine Palms Mayor and San Bernardino County official has been badly injured in a freak plane crash in San Diego County. Jim Bagley is at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido with fractured vertebrae and for pain management. Bagley told Z107.7 News he was working as a tow pilot shortly after noon Saturday at the Warner Springs Glide Port in North County when the glider he was towing got wildly out of position. After a series of pilot-induced oscillations, the glider went high and right, yanking the tail of the tow plane into the air before he could disconnect. Bagley’s tow plane slammed into the ground, destroying the aircraft; the glider landed safely. The operator of the Glide Center said the crash was an aberration and a very unusual event. Bagley, who served on the Twentynine Palms City Council from 1992 to 2004, including three terms as mayor, said he was very lucky to be alive. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Bureau are investigating. Bagley said they have fitted him with a brace which should let him go home this week.
