FALLEN CLIMBER RESCUED IN JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK

A man was rescued in Joshua Tree National Park Sunday morning, after he dislocated a hip following a fall while climbing near Jumbo Rocks campground. According to a park press release, David Mazal, of Bishop, was belaying for another climber on the Gem route of the Conan’s Corrider climb about 11:30 a.m. when he fell about eight feet and slammed into a rock about 20 feet above ground level. Mazal dislocated his hip during the fall and needed help getting down. Members of the Joshua Tree Search and Rescue, park rangers, and Morongo Basin Ambulance found Mazal in a tight spot, but were able to slowly extricate him. He was evacuated via a litter to Park Boulevard, and then taken by ambulance to Hi-Desert Medical Center for treatment.
