DESERT RENEWABLE ENERGY PLAN A CAUSE FOR LOCAL CONCERN

A government plan called “The Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan” is making its rounds. The proposal may have very negative impacts on our slice of the California Desert. Reporter Mike Lipsitz explains…
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ve probably heard something of the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan, also known by its initials, DRECP. And whether or not it sounds like something of interest to you now, once complete, the plan will have a dramatic effect on the desert and all who live here. At its core, the plan focuses on the often conflicting goals of protection and conservation of desert ecosystems and the ambitious plans for large-scale solar and wind energy development across seven southern California counties encompassing more than 22 million acres of, mostly public, desert land. Not yet complete, the DRECP is being fast-tracked through a collaborative effort between state and federal agencies, a process that carries with it the potential to side-step zoning and land use plans at the county and local levels, overlooking community concerns and those of private land owners who will certainly be impacted.
