CITATIONS FOR TEXTING AND DRIVING ARE UP IN THE MORONGO BASIN

Texting while driving is very dangerous, distracted driving brings serious danger to those doing it, and others on the road. In spite of that knowledge, and laws against it, people are still texting and driving. Managing editor Tami Roleff says local citations for texting while driving are up…

Every time I’m out driving in my car, I see people talking on their cell phones. The California Highway Patrol has seen them too. A new study released Tuesday by the CHP and Office of Traffic Safety found the percentage of Californians who use a cell phone while driving has increased by more than one-third over last year, from 6.6 percent last year to 9.2 percent in 2015. In the Morongo Basin, the number of citations for using cell phones has declined significantly over last year, although citations for texting is way up. CHP Officer Joan Griffin said the CHP issued 424 cell phone citations last year in the Morongo Basin, but only 122 in the first six months of 2015. However, texting citations for the first six months in 2015 are nearly equal for all of last year: 23 this year so far, compared to 27 for all of last year.
