CHP TO OFFER “START SMART” CLASS FOR TEEN DRIVERS THIS WEEK

The CHP has an education program that targets the most accident-prone age group of drivers. Dan Stork says teen drivers can “Start Smart” this Thursday…

The California Highway Patrol is offering another free Start Smart class, at the Morongo Basin Area CHP office, on Thursday, August 22 at 6 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Parents and newly licensed or soon-to-be-drivers with questions or wishing to pre-register, should contact the Morongo Basin CHP office at 760-366-3707. Drivers between 16 and 19 years old have a fatal accident rate more than three times that of those between 30 and 69. Teen drivers are found at fault in 66 percent of all fatal collisions that they are involved in, although they only represent 4 percent of the state’s licensed drivers. California has the second highest fatality rate involving drivers between the ages of 15 to 19. Start Smart speaks directly to the teen drivers and their parents or guardians. This program provides classroom instruction on collision avoidance techniques, collision causing elements, and driver responsibilities.
