ART RECEPTIONS TONIGHT IN JOSHUA TREE, TOMORROW IN TWENTYNINE PALMS

Shibui is Japanese for “restrained elegance” or “unobtrusive beauty” and is the theme for this month’s exhibit currently on display at Gallery 62 in Joshua Tree. Painters Janis Commentz, Marjorie Franklin, and Glenn Grubbs, along photography by Bill Dahl, pottery by Ed Keesling, and painting and fabric dolls by Anna Houghton, will be on display through February 1 at the Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Commission’s gallery. An opening reception will be held Saturday, January 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. during the Second Saturday Art Crawl in Joshua Tree. The gallery is located at 61871 Highway 62, just east of Art Queen.

The Joshua Tree Art Gallery, or JTAG, is also holding its opening reception tonight during the Saturday Night Art Crawl for its invitational show, Rocks/Paper/Scissors. Voting for the People’s Choice Award starts at 10 a.m. today, and cash prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third place winners. The reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the gallery, 61607 29 Palms Highway in Joshua Tree.

The 29 Palms Art Gallery will host an art reception tomorrow from noon to 3 p.m. In the East Gallery is the “Woodlands” show, featuring wood sculptures by Eva Montville of Joshua Tree, pyrography by Shirley James of Yucca Valley, and night paintings on wood by David Greene of Wonder Valley. Photographer Sant Khalsa of Joshua Tree has created an exhibition of her black-and-white images and mixed media work titled “Re:Visions” in the West Gallery, and work in a variety of media by Artists’ Guild members is featured in the Pickering Room. The January exhibition will remain on display at the gallery through January 25. The 29 Palms Art Gallery is located on Cottonwood Drive, at the corner of National Park Drive, and is open noon to 3 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday.
