AN ONLINE EMPLOYMENT SCAM

A Twentynine Palms woman is out $12,000 after falling victim to another Internet scam. According to a Sheriff’s report, the woman found a job online that said she would be paid $3,500 a month. But first, she had to set up a bank account and transfer funds from the company’s bank account to her bank account. Then for the next two months, she sent money via moneygrams and Western Union— totaling $12,000—to the company. She later discovered the company’s bank account was fraudulent and had no money and that she is personally responsible for the $12,000. Managing editor Tami Roleff has tips for how to spot employment scams…

Monster.com lists descriptive words in job postings that are tip-offs to fraud. Their list includes “package-forwarding,” “money transfers,” “wiring funds,” “eBay,” and “PayPal.” If the term”Foreign Agent Agreement” appears in contracts and emails, be wary of those as well. Other red flags that should alert you to the presence of a job scam include: a request for your bank account number; an email address that is not a primary domain, for example, Yahoo; and misspellings and grammatical mistakes in the job ad.
