ABOUT 300 MARINES GET CLASSIC RIDES FROM THE PALM SPRINGS AIRPORT

About 300 Marines got a classic free ride from the Palm Springs Airport to the Twentynine Palms base over the weekend. The surprise transportation was compliments of Soldiers Organized Services and the Morongo Basin Old Car Club. The Marines, returning from Thanksgiving with their families, were driven back to the base in restored classic cars for a second year in a row. Plans to use 16 vintage cars were changed by strong winds and volunteers used their personal cars for the lengthy drive. Three classic carsā€”a 1927 Model T, a 1942 Ford Convertible, and a 2002 Corvetteā€”were still able to make the trip. Erica Stone, founder of Soldiers Organized Services, said the rides are a reprieve for many Marines who struggle to afford trips back home for the holidays. A one-way cab ride from the Palm Springs airport to the base can cost as much as $200, according to Stone.
