A MODERATE WILDFLOWER SEASON BEGINS

Warmer wetter weather is bringing a moderate wildflower season to our desert region. Reporter Mike Lipsitz says the wildflowers are already starting to show their colors in Joshua Tree National Parkā€¦
Rain fell somewhere in the Basin every month since November; and while experts arenā€™t predicting a banner year, this springā€™s wildflower displays are likely to be the brightest in recent memory. Here are two tips to make sure you catch them: slow down and check out the wildflower reports compiled by National Park staff and volunteers during the blooming season. Updated every Friday, the reports note whatā€™s blooming and where. The latest reports indicate Joshua Trees are budding and blooming at Keys View and Black Rock Campground. Annual flowers on Black Rockā€™s Westside Loop Trail include: filaree (Erodium cicutarium), tidy-tips (Layia glandulosa), chia (Salvia columbariae), checker fiddleneck (Amsinckia tessellata), desert parsley (Lomatium mohavense), and pale primrose (Camissoniopsis pallida). Along Pinto Basin Road near the cholla garden, and on Cottonwood Springs Road near Mile Post 33. The yellow blooming bushes are bladderpod (Peritoma arborea), theyā€™re among the showiest flowers in the park. The displays are just beginning so check out the list yourself by following the link in this story (http://www.nps.gov/jotr/planyourvisit/blooms.htm) at Z1077fm.com.
