A HUGE WIN FOR TWENTYNINE PALMS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

The Twentynine Palms varsity Wildcats traveled to Big Bear Saturday afternoon to face the Bears in what has been a very important DeAnza League contest between long-time rivals. The winner of this contest has usually won or shared the league title over the past decade. The ‘Cats brought a #3 CIF ranking and a 6-0 record into the game, while the Bears were 4-2 on the season and 1-1 in league play. The day, however would belong to the visitors, as Twentynine Palms opened the first half with 35 consecutive points in route to a 49-0 victory.
A big break for the ‘Cats occurred on the first play of the game, as the opening kickoff bounced off a Bear lineman and was recovered by linebacker Colton Myers at the 40-yard line. The offense would march 60 yards in 10 plays, ending with a 5-yard run by senior running back Donovan Esquilin. Senior quarterback Jimmy Shragge connected on three passes on the drive to seniors Kyle Hope and Demetrius Holmes to keep the chains moving on the opening drive.
The Wildcats offense was very balanced on the day, rushing for 215 yards and passing for 207 yards in a tremendous effort. Senior running back Beayahn Carrllo carried 19 times for 131 yards and three rushing touchdowns. Shragge connected on 15 of 18 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns, which were brought down by wide out Demetrius Holmes. Holmes leads all Northwest division receivers’ with10 total touchdowns after week 7.
Defensively, the ‘Cats forced five turnovers, including three interceptions and two fumble recoveries, which all led to Wildcats points. Eneliko Tuli, Colton Myers, and sophomore D’Shaun Barrett each brought in an interception for the game, as the ‘Cats defense held the Bears to only 99 total yards on the game. The home team was held to 90 yards on the ground and only crossed midfield once during the game.
The big quarter of the game for the ‘Cats was the second, as the team scored 28 points to take a 35-0 halftime lead. Colton Myers’ interception set the Wildcats up at the 37-yard line early in the quarter. Eight plays later, Esquilin would slam in from the 2-yard line on fourth down, to give the Cats a 14-0 lead. Carrllo would then score three consecutive times, on runs of 16, 2, and 29. Demetrius Holmes added the final scores with receptions of 33 and five yards. The ‘Cats scored with only 38 seconds left in the first half, as Myers forced a fumble on the kickoff, which was picked up by senior Jacob Gutierrez at the 11-yard line. Three plays later Shragge connected on a 5-yard fade pass to Holmes to make the score 35-0 with 10 seconds left in the half.
Outstanding efforts were made by the offensive and defensive front lines as they held the Bears to under 100 yards and dominated offensively for over 400 total yards. Key leaders on the line were Shane Estrada, Andrew Wilson, Eric Jordan, Nick Folts, Ryan Sullivan, and Hekili Paahana. Defensive leaders were Esquilin with 11 tackles followed by Kyle Hope with 9, and Colton Myers with 7. Michael Clark led the defensive line with five tackles, and Gunnar Moss tallied four tackles for the game.
The 7-0 Cats will travel the next two weeks as they face Desert Hot Springs next Friday. DHS has a 3-1-league record and is in a tie for second with Shadow Hills and Rancho Mirage. The frosh-soph team is also 7-0 as they won 22-14 over Big Bear earlier Saturday morning.
