14-YEAR-OLD TWENTYNINE PALMS GIRL SHOT PROTECTING HER NEPHEW IN LOS ANGELES

A Twentynine Palms girl was shot last week while protecting her 10-month-old nephew during a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. According to KABC-7 TV, De Je Brewer, 14, was in LA for a funeral. She was sitting in the family’s car in her sister’s driveway in south Los Angeles about 9 p.m. Tuesday when another car pulled up behind them and started shooting. De Je, a straight-A ninth grader, said she felt something hit her arm; when she touched it, she saw blood. She said she then leaned over her 10-month-old nephew—who was in a car seat next to her—to shield him from the bullets. De Je was also shot in the back and doctors say the bullet just missed her lung. She was the only person in the car who was hit by bullets. Los Angeles police said they found seven bullet casings at the scene, but they have no clues as to who shot De Je or why.
